Is there a link between sexual repression in persons with intellectual disability and inappropriate sexual behaviour?
Because people with intellectual disabilities have historically been seen as infantile and asexual by society, they frequently face repression and control of their sexuality. Unfortunately, some people with intellectual disabilities may have been taught that any form of sexual expression is inappropriate. Before the person may acquire more appropriate behaviors, this may need to be addressed. People in these conditions may desire sexual connections, but their parents or guardians may refuse to let them, perhaps by not allowing privacy. Restriction at home may lead to risky or unlawful behavior, such as sex in parks or other public locations.
