Is the Mirena Coil safe for sex?
The Mirena Coil is an IUD (Intra-Uterine Device). An IUD is a very efficient birth control method. During intercourse, you should not be aware of your IUD as it is a very little device. The device sits inside the uterus when correctly implanted, and just the strings are visible in the vagina, which may be felt by your partner.
IUDs can shift or slip out, this is referred to as expulsion, however, this is uncommon, and there is no higher risk of this happening during intercourse. In fact, it is more likely for an IUD to fall out during your period; some physicians recommend examining the IUD's strings once a month to make sure it's still in the appropriate place between periods.
If you have symptoms or believe it has relocated, you should consult a professional as something may have gone wrong if you can feel the IUD. The IUD no longer protects against pregnancy if it has moved or fallen out of the uterus. It's critical to see a doctor to have the IUD properly removed or repositioned.
